The total population for the Los Angeles metropolitan area at the 2010 Census was 12,872,808.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Los Angeles metropolitan area has a total area of 4,850 miles.

However, while the wider combined statistical area covers 33,954 square miles (87,940.456 km), or a bit larger

 

The State of Israel including Palestine has a population of approximately 7,933,200 inhabitants as of 2012.

Israel is one of the tiniest nations on the face of the earth... only about 8,000 sq. miles

Many readers are unfamiliar with the size and population of Israel. Very smart to give such a comparison so they have some idea of the scope of the problem.
