The conservative, strongly Catholic Basque country, along with Galicia and the more left-leaning Catalonia, sought autonomy or even independence from the central government of Madrid.
Those areas still want their independents from Madrid. Well they get it now as they are doing ‘better’ financially than the rest of Spain?

I think it's a given that the Spanish government will collapse in the next few years. The question then becomes whether they'll allow the Basques to form their own country.
It will then come down to who has the most power. The Basques are more financially secure but the Spanish government has the armed forces to enforce their wishes.
Who wins? I haven't a clue.
